Irish statistics and challenges for preterm babies

Latest figures on preterm infants in Ireland.

    • 7% of total births were preterm (<37 weeks gestation)1
    • 6% of live births were low birthweight (< 2,500 grams)1
    • Preterm births reported an average length of stay in hospital of 12.9 days (compared to 2.7 days in infants born at term)

    Previously, the percentage of total births recording low birthweight (<2,500 grams) was 4.9 per cent in 2002 compared with 5.2% for 20112. 5.4% of live births were <2,500g and 0.3% of live births were <1,000g.
